Rug Rage

By Heather Shoning

A QUICK WAY TO CREATE a whole new look in a room is to add a rug. Use it to ground a seating area. The rug should cover an area just slightly smaller than where the furniture sits. Choose a neutral hue or one with a pop of color that complements the furnishings.

Don’t be afraid to use more than one rug in a space. Layer rugs of different colors and patterns. Or use two or three rugs in the same color palette with different patterns to cover a large space. If you love the look of Oriental rugs, don’t be afraid to mix and match and layer them, too.

Rug fiber is an important consideration. Wool is easy to maintain and stands up well to heavy tra€c. Sisal is biodegradable and non-toxic, and the flat weave makes a great base layer for a second rug. Nylon is the most commonly used fiber for rugs. It’s easy to clean and can maintain its shape even after furniture sits on it.

Bold, geometric patterns are popular, and animal prints are on-trend this season. You’ll see a fresh take on traditional floral patterns. Ombre is a haute look for everything from the runway to the hallway.
