Living Outside the Box

THE PRIMARY REQUIREMENT for the design of this home in Breckenridge was that the kitchen, dining room and great room be completely open to one another. “The homeowner was adamant that she be able to stand in the kitchen and see everyone in the other two rooms,” says Suzanne Allen- Guerra, co-owner at Allen-Guerra Architecture. Co-owner, Courtney Saldivar, took the design challenge and created a spectacular, wide-open home with incredible mountain views and direct access to a neighboring Nordic trail.

“At first glance, the footprint on paper is kind of boring,” Allen-Guerra says. “However, the home is very dynamic in reality.” The open cathedral ceilings, refined yet mountain-style beams and large expanses of windows create the dramatic design.
Saldivar was somewhat limited in how the home would sit on the site, and only one end of the home could face the mountain. She started at that end with the great room and its large expanse of windows, and then designed the rest of the home from there. The result is a luxurious home with an open floor plan and “mountain elegant” detailing.
